The gods have been with us since the dawn of civilization. They are many, and they're found in the different lands all over the world. Even if you've never learned about them before you've heard some of their names. Zeus, Apollo, Aphrodite. Others are less well known in today's culture but have no less effect on it: Prometheus, Ba'al, Athena, Osiris, Enlil, Isis, etc. Gods Before Him is a fascinating look at the gods that have been with us since time immemorial. The title is a double reference to Exodus 20:3, the first Commandment which states "Thou shalt have no other gods before me.". It is also a reference to the great age of these gods the Commandment is talking about. Some of these gods are older than the Bible itself and date back over 5,000 years, yet amazingly still remain relevant in our society to this very moment. When you look at the background image of this page you are seeing a statue of the Greek god Atlas which presently sits in Rockefeller Center in New York City, New York. At 30 Rockefeller Center("30 Rock") is also a statue of Prometheus. After thousands of years, the gods of the ancient world are still all around us. But not every god is happy about this...
"Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth." (Deuteronomy 6:14-15)
Christian belief teaches us that the god of the Bible is the only god, the uppercase God, the creator of all things and all-powerful. Yet he's also very jealous. Many have been perplexed by this notion. Perhaps the most famous example of recent times is formerly Baptist Christian and talk show host Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey revealed that the idea of God experiencing jealousy struck her as so unbelievable that it caused her to change her entire religious denomination. So why exactly would god of the Bible, the omnipotent creator of the universe and all that is in it, ever be jealous of anyone or anything? Gods Before Him answers this plus explores many other key questions about religion and myth. Why is knowledge of the ancient gods important today? If Zeus is the god of thunder and Poseidon is the god of the seas, then what is God the god of? Since God proves his existence in the Bible over and over again, why did people still want to worship other gods?
